Criminal Statistics
The Louisiana Statistical Analysis Center collates, monitors and maintains the statistical and analytical crime data of all state parishes. According to its 2017 report, Lafayette Parish recorded a total of 1,754 reported crimes. Larceny-theft was the most common with 967 reported incidents, while aggravated assault and rape were the most common violent crimes with 241 and 31 incidents recorded respectively. Other crimes such as burglary, motor vehicle theft, robbery, and murder accounted for less than 30% of the total crimes putting Lafayette Parish in the top 50% of violent-crime safe communities.

The Louisiana State Police Department maintains state-wide criminal history records and performs background checks on request. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is the main law enforcement agency of the Parish. It manages criminal information of the Parish as well as processes requests for criminal history records and background checks of parish residents.
How to Get Criminal Records
The Records Division of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is tasked with the management and maintenance of information generated by the office. The division responds to public requests for background and criminal history records for personal and employment purposes.
Criminal history records and background checks may be requested in person at the LPSO Records Department. How to Get Arrest Records and Police Reports
Police, incident and accident reports can all be obtained from the Records Division of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office. Interested persons are advised to wait at least 7-10 days after the occurrence before requesting any report, and then query the sheriff's office in person during working hours on the day of request. Requesting parties will be required to pay a fee of $10 for incident reports and initial reports and $8 for accident reports. Requests should be made to:

Similarly, arrest records can be obtained from the department by requesting a background check which costs $25. Background checks may also include conviction information, misdemeanors, and charges pending in court. Interested persons may also view daily arrest reports on the LPSO Daily Arrest Report Page or subscribe to the Sheriffs arrest email alert on the page in order to stay up to date on recent arrests in the Parish.
How to Find The Sex Offender Registry and Other Sex Offender Information
The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office registers sex offenders residing within the parish and maintains a public access sex offender registry. The registry is updated daily and may be searched by name, city or specific locations. Interested persons may also take advantage of the Sheriffs email notification feature that alerts registrants of sex offenders nearby or within a specific radius.
How to Find Inmate and Jail Information
Information about currently incarcerated persons in Lafayette falls under the public record umbrella and is maintained on the LPSOs 'See Who is In Jail' page. Members of the public may view recently arrested, booked and all incarcerated inmates including those awaiting trial in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. Information about active warrants, bond, and jail location information are also available in the Live Jail DataBase. Inmates can be searched by name, year of birth or CCN.

Where and How to Get Court Records
The Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court makes court records available to eligible members of the public through a variety of means. Persons requiring copies of court records may mail in a written request, with details of the record required. However, the preferred retrieval option is by subscribing to the Clerks Online Records Search which grants members full access to non-confidential court and land records.
All criminal, traffic, and family information including charges, history, date filed and dispositions of cases from January 1986 are available on the ClerkConnect Website. To access the site, interested persons are required to complete the Credit Application for Charge Account and Online Court and Land Records Subscription Agreement and send via mail, along with a payment of $165 to the Clerk's office.

Vital Records
The Louisiana Department of Health is the central repository of all death and birth records for the state. However, marriage and divorce records are typically processed in the Parish where the marriage license or divorce was granted. The Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court handles all records of in-Parish death, birth, marriage, and divorce. The office also compiles and issues records of Lafayette indigenes.
Where And How To Get Divorce RecordsThe Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court processes requests for divorce records only if the divorce was granted by the Parish court. Where and How to Get Marriage Records
Requests for marriage records are processed by the Marriage License Department of the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Courts Office. These records are only available to persons whose marriage licenses were issued by the department in the first place.
Requestors are required to complete a Request for Certified Copies of Marriage Records application which should be sent alongside a cheque or money order payment of $10 and a self-addressed and stamped envelope to:

Where And How To Get Birth And Death Records
The Birth Certificate Department and Death Certificate Department of the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Courts Office is both solely tasked with managing and dispensing birth and death records.
The offices maintain and provide copies of birth records from approximately 1930 to date and death records from July 9, 2012, to date. However, requests can only be made in person at the Clerk of Court's office. Retrieval of either record type will require that the requesting party provide a government-issued ID and make a payment of $48 for birth records or $26 for a death record. The office is located at:

Requests for records of deaths that occurred earlier than July 2012 may be directed to the State Registrar and Vital Records Office of the Louisiana Department of Health. Only persons directly related to the deceased, or legally certified may request and obtain these records.

Record seekers may either opt to use these tools to search for a specific record or multiple records. Users are able to search third-party websites remotely for multiple records at a time with just the name of the record subject and their last known location, including the city, county, or state. Are Property Records Open to the Public in Lafayette Parish?
Lafayette Parish property records are open to the public as provided by the Louisiana Public Records Law.
